Clemson’s defense is about to undergo a powerful revival under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen, according to ESPN analyst Sam Acho. The former University of Texas and NFL linebacker believes Allen will have a game-changing impact on the Tigers.
Clemson’s defensive woes were glaring throughout 2024, especially in crucial moments. From surrendering 288 rushing yards to The Citadel to allowing a season-high 292 yards in a playoff loss to Texas, it’s clear the Tigers struggled to stop the run. “I called Clemson’s game against South Carolina, and it was evident—they lost because of their defense. Missed tackles and big runs were their undoing,” said Acho.
Allen, officially named Clemson’s defensive coordinator on January 14, brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the table. His track record speaks for itself, including seven seasons as Indiana’s head coach, where he earned the prestigious AFCA National Coach of the Year award in 2020. Most recently, Allen made waves at Penn State, where his defense ranked among the nation’s best—finishing seventh in total defense and second in tackles for loss.
Now, Allen faces the challenge of revamping a Clemson defense that struggled in 2024 under former coordinator Wes Goodwin. Despite a potent offense, the Tigers ranked 49th in points allowed, 53rd in passing defense, and 85th in rushing defense. But Allen isn’t fazed. “He’s going to bring a surge to that defense,” Acho says. “Clemson has a rich tradition of elite defense, and Allen is the coach to restore it.”
With top-tier talent like rising stars Sammy Brown and Avieon Terrell already in place, Allen is stepping into a goldmine of defensive potential. Clemson fans can expect a transformation as their new defensive leader takes charge.
