Big news for the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl as New York Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen has tapped Giants inside linebacker coach John Egorugwu to serve as defensive coordinator for the West Team at the upcoming January 30 event.
Egorugwu, who joined the Giants in 2022 as part of the new regime under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, brings a wealth of experience to the West Team. Prior to his Giants role, Egorugwu spent a year as Vanderbilt’s linebackers coach, following four seasons (2017-2020) with the Buffalo Bills as a defensive quality control coach and assistant linebackers coach, where he worked closely with Daboll.
Egorugwu’s impressive coaching resume also includes a stint with the Baltimore Ravens under former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale (2015-2016), further strengthening his credentials as a defensive mastermind.
Under his guidance, the Giants’ inside linebackers have flourished, with standout performances from veteran Bobby Okereke and the rapid growth of 2022 fifth-round pick Micah McFadden.
With Egorugwu now leading the West Team’s defense at the Shrine Bowl, all eyes will be on his dynamic coaching style as he looks to elevate the next generation of talent.
