While the Clemson Tigers showed signs of a promising ’24 season, changes are still afoot in the coaching staff, with head coach Dabo Swinney making tough decisions. According to Pete Nakos of On3.com, Clemson has officially decided not to retain defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin in his current role. However, there’s speculation he could return to the program in a different capacity as an analyst.
The Tigers have been busy evaluating their options, and more clarity on Goodwin’s status is expected soon. After taking the reins in 2022 following Brent Venables’ departure to Oklahoma, Goodwin’s tenure has been a rollercoaster. While the defense showed flashes of brilliance, including a nomination for the prestigious Broyles Award in 2023, this past season saw a significant decline. Clemson’s defense faltered in key moments, including a dismal performance in their Playoff debut against Texas, where they allowed a staggering 292 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Despite these setbacks, Goodwin received a substantial pay increase last February, lifting his salary to $1.4 million, positioning him among the top 30 assistant coaches in the country.
Speculation is already swirling about the 40-year-old’s potential return to Oklahoma under his former mentor, Brent Venables. If Goodwin takes another job instead of being dismissed, he would owe Clemson 25% of his remaining salary, unless the university chooses to waive the penalty.
