As Tennessee’s receiver exodus to the transfer portal grabs the headlines, another key offseason storyline is brewing—defensive coordinator Tim Banks’ future. With his contract set to expire after the 2024 season, Tennessee has yet to secure an extension with Banks, making him a prime candidate for other defensive coordinator roles.
Miami, in need of a defensive boost, has listed Banks as the second-highest candidate for its vacant defensive coordinator position. On3’s Pete Nakos highlighted him alongside Georgia Tech’s Tyler Santucci and Miami’s own Jason Taylor on the Hurricanes’ coaching shortlist.
Miami parted ways with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry after a disappointing season where the Hurricanes’ defense ranked 69th nationally, allowing 25.3 points per game. With the team missing out on a spot in the ACC Championship and potentially the College Football Playoffs, they’re eager to revamp their defensive strategy.
Meanwhile, Banks’ defense has been a cornerstone of Tennessee’s success. The Vols’ defense was instrumental in their 10-3 record and College Football Playoff berth, holding opponents to just 16.1 points per game—ranking third in the SEC. Despite a couple of tough games, including a 31-point surrender to Georgia and a 42-point blowout loss to Ohio State, Tennessee’s defense under Banks has steadily improved year after year.
Having joined Tennessee with head coach Josh Heupel in 2021, Banks has transformed a defense that was previously thin in talent and depth. His efforts were key to the Vols’ victories over teams like Oklahoma, Florida, and Alabama, even when their offense struggled.
