For the second straight year, Oklahoma’s running back situation was a whirlwind of talent, uncertainty, and constant shuffling. The Sooners boasted plenty of ability, but consistency was nowhere to be found. The depth chart? A scrambled mess. Each week brought a different starter, a new hope, but little clarity on who would emerge as the true leader.
Last season, it was Jovantae Barnes, Marcus Major, and Tawee Walker, all taking turns before Gavin Sawchuk took charge late. This year, Sawchuk opened as the lead back, only to be replaced by Barnes, who became the most reliable option until a season-ending injury. Freshman Taylor Tatum got his shot as Barnes went down, but it was fellow rookie Xavier Robinson who showed the most promise.
Injuries were a major factor, but coaching decisions kept the carousel spinning. Sawchuk, despite high expectations, couldn’t find a rhythm, and Tatum, despite flashes of brilliance, struggled with ball security. Barnes had the brightest stretch, including a dominant 204-yard, 3-TD performance against Maine, but his ankle injury brought his season to a screeching halt.
Robinson was the revelation of the season, showing what he could do when given the chance. He had a breakout performance with 107 yards and two touchdowns against Alabama, but still found himself sidelined for much of the year. Murray’s decisions, often puzzling, left fans and analysts scratching their heads.
DeMarco Murray, a legend in the Sooner backfield, holds high expectations for his players. Yet, in 2024, the position was plagued by inconsistency. Barnes led the charge with 577 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Robinson showed real potential, contributing 233 yards and 4 scores in limited action. Tatum, meanwhile, flashed his ability with 278 yards but couldn’t overcome his fumble problems.
Ultimately, the running back group’s performance was impacted by Oklahoma’s broader offensive struggles. Injuries ravaged the receiving corps, and the offensive line never quite gelled. Still, with a few key pieces returning, there’s hope for a more stable and potent backfield in 2025.
Looking ahead, will Robinson continue to rise? Can Tatum secure the ball? Will Barnes and Sawchuk make a grand return? The answers lie in DeMarco Murray’s hands once again, as he seeks to turn talent into consistency.
