Each year, millions of Americans set New Year’s resolutions, aiming to improve their lives—more family time, healthier habits, saving money, and quitting bad habits. Yet, by mid-January, most have already let go of those promises. This “Quitters Day” typically falls around January 17th. But while most fall off the wagon, I have four bold resolutions that the Clemson Tigers must hold on to and turn into game-changing victories for 2025.
Dive Headfirst into the Transfer Portal
In 2024, Coach Dabo Swinney dipped a toe into the transfer portal, bringing in Purdue’s Will Heldt and Southeast Missouri State’s Tristan Smith. Heldt, a 6-5, 265-pound defensive end, boasts impressive stats, with 56 tackles and five sacks, while Smith, a 6-5, 205-pound wide receiver, is coming off a stellar career in Kansas and Missouri. But the Tigers’ work is far from done—if Swinney dives all in, Clemson could land more game-changers to fill critical roster gaps.
Stop the Run, Win the Game
Clemson’s run defense was a glaring weakness in 2024, giving up the most rushing yards since 2011 and ranking 86th nationally. If the Tigers want to seriously compete for a College Football Playoff spot in 2025, this has to change. Their defense needs to step up, especially when facing well-rounded offenses. Resolving to shut down the run is a must if they want to reclaim their dominance.
Two Dangerous Running Backs—A Must
Phil Mafah had a breakout season with over 1,100 rushing yards, but injuries sidelined him toward the end of the year. Clemson lacked a solid backup to step in when needed. In 2025, the Tigers need a two-back system that mirrors the success of past seasons, like the powerful duo of Mafah and Will Shipley. Having two dependable running backs isn’t just a resolution—it’s essential for success.
Aggressive Offense—Unlock the Potential
With Cade Klubnik returning for his senior year and a stacked receiving corps featuring Bryant Wesco, T.J. Moore, Tyler Brown, and possibly Antonio Williams, Clemson’s offense is primed to dominate. Offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s aggressive play calling was a highlight in 2024, especially in the second half against Texas. If the Tigers continue to push the pace and stay aggressive, their offense can achieve greatness in 2025.
Clemson has the talent, the drive, and the potential to make these resolutions a reality. By addressing key areas of improvement and committing to relentless ambition, the Tigers can make 2025 their most successful season yet.
