Oklahoma’s defense is shaping up to be a powerhouse next season as key players announce their returns. Robert Spears-Jennings, coming off a breakout 2024 season, confirmed he’ll be back for his senior year, adding to the excitement. His decision comes just one day after defensive tackle Damonic Williams declared he would return rather than enter the NFL Draft.
Spears-Jennings was a standout last season, starting in the final 11 games and posting 66 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, an interception, two fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles. His return strengthens the Sooners’ already formidable defense. Despite the departure of linebacker Danny Stutsman and safety Billy Bowman Jr., who have exhausted their eligibility and are heading to the NFL, Oklahoma remains stacked on defense.
Alongside Spears-Jennings and Williams, Oklahoma will welcome back a host of talented players, including cornerback Eli Bowen, linebackers Kobie McKinzie and Kip Lewis, and defensive linemen Gracen Halton and Jayden Jackson. While the Sooners await defensive end R Mason Thomas’ decision, the team’s defensive core is looking stronger than ever.
Though Oklahoma faces a coaching change with Zac Alley moving on to West Virginia as defensive coordinator, the commitment from these players signals that the defense is still primed to dominate. With or without new leadership, this returning talent positions Oklahoma to be one of the SEC’s most formidable defensive forces.
