While Oklahoma’s transfer class may not be the largest, the Sooners are set to make waves this cycle thanks to the addition of Washington State quarterback John Mateer. Although the Sooners may have lost more talent than they’ve gained overall, they’ve certainly secured one of the biggest victories with Mateer, the top transfer quarterback in the portal.
In his first year as a starter, Mateer exploded for nearly 4,000 yards of offense and 44 touchdowns, with much of his success coming from his impressive running ability. But what’s really got people talking is how he’s catching the eye of legends like former Oklahoma linebacker Brian Bosworth. Bosworth is all-in on Mateer’s athleticism, even comparing his lateral agility to that of an NFL and College Football Hall of Famer.
“Mateer is fearless in the pocket and lightning-fast when he decides to run,” Bosworth said. “He reminds me of Barry Sanders with the way he can stop and start, shifting laterally, then quickly turning it upfield with explosive speed. He’s a dynamic quarterback.”
While comparisons to the legendary Barry Sanders—widely regarded as the best running back of all time—might seem a bit lofty, there’s no denying Mateer’s athleticism and playmaking ability.
