Jake Roberts Reflects on College Career with Oklahoma: Thankful and Blessed

Oklahoma tight end Jake Roberts closed out his college career in dramatic fashion during the Armed Forces Bowl, catching a 10-yard touchdown pass from Michael Hawkins with just six seconds remaining, bringing the Sooners within one point of Navy. Despite the heartbreaking 21-20 loss, Roberts, a Norman native, was proud to finish his career in crimson and cream, reflecting on the journey that brought him back home from Baylor.

“It’s been incredible to live out a childhood dream,” said Roberts after the game. “Even though the season didn’t go the way we hoped, I’m thankful for the opportunity to play at the highest level in the SEC. There’s been a lot of growth through adversity. I wouldn’t change anything. I’m blessed to have been a Sooner.”

Meanwhile, Oklahoma’s backfield remained a mystery during the bowl game. Gavin Sawchuk, starting despite a tough season, led the rushers with 67 yards, but a confusing rotation of backs left many questions unanswered. Freshmen Taylor Tatum and Xavier Robinson, who showed promise during the regular season, barely saw the field. Coach Brent Venables attributed the struggles to inconsistent play and a lack of rhythm.

In an unexpected twist, freshman tight end Davon Mitchell, a reclassified 2024 recruit, didn’t play in the bowl game despite fans hoping to see his debut. Mitchell took to social media to take responsibility for his lack of playing time, saying, “I wasn’t consistent this year. I trust the staff, and we all need to execute better.”

On defense, while the Sooners struggled with a few big plays, including a 95-yard touchdown run by Navy’s quarterback, there were signs of growth. Venables expressed pride in his defensive unit, noting the improvement over recent years and the legacy left by key players like Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman, who are headed to the NFL.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on junior defensive end R Mason Thomas, who has until January 15 to decide whether to declare for the NFL Draft or return for his senior season. Thomas, who led the team with 11.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks, is weighing his options carefully.

With nine players already signed in the winter transfer portal, including high-profile addition quarterback John Mateer from Washington State, Oklahoma’s future is looking brighter. Coach Venables plans to bring in between eight to twelve players this cycle to further strengthen the Sooners’ roster.

Despite a tough season, the Sooner Nation remains hopeful, with Roberts’ heartfelt words and the offseason moves showing that brighter days are ahead for Oklahoma football.
