Joey McGuire’s hopes for a triumphant Liberty Bowl win to boost Texas Tech’s momentum into the 2025 season were dashed as Arkansas delivered a dominant 39-26 victory in Memphis on Friday night. The Razorbacks exploded early, jumping to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter, then withstood a challenge from the Red Raiders in the second quarter before taking control in the second half to seal their third consecutive bowl victory under head coach Sam Pittman.
For McGuire, a native of Texarkana, Texas, the loss was especially frustrating. The Red Raiders were missing key players, including starting quarterback Behren Morton, top receiver Josh Kelly, and leading rusher Tahj Brooks, who opted out just before the game. Despite the absence of several key players on both sides, Arkansas capitalized on big plays and solid performances to secure the win.
Razorbacks’ quarterback Taylen Green stole the spotlight, earning MVP honors with 341 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 81 rushing yards. Arkansas was also fueled by explosive plays from wide receiver Dazmin James, who set a school record with a 94-yard touchdown, and standout performances from tailbacks Rodney Hill and Braylen Russell.
McGuire acknowledged Arkansas’ strong performance, noting, “I expected that from Green. He played well, and their young running backs really stepped up too.” The Razorbacks’ offense was relentless, with Hill’s 70-yard touchdown run, a 47-yard touchdown pass from Green to Tyrell Reed, and multiple big plays leading to their commanding lead.
The Red Raiders struggled defensively, giving up several explosive plays that put them in an early hole. McGuire reflected on the team’s challenges: “Too many big plays, mistakes, and turnovers,” adding that the team’s second-half performance was marred by defensive lapses and missed opportunities.
Despite a valiant comeback attempt, with Texas Tech pulling within 24-19 at halftime, the second half was a different story. Arkansas continued to capitalize on Red Raider mistakes, with Green hitting Reed for a touchdown and a safety from defensive lineman Anton Juncaj sealing the Razorbacks’ dominant finish.
As the season closes, McGuire and the Red Raiders now turn their attention to the offseason. While McGuire expressed disappointment for his seniors, he also looks ahead with optimism, especially with the arrival of new coordinators in offensive mastermind Mack Leftwich and defensive strategist Shiel Wood. “We’ve got two new coordinators coming in, and I’m excited for what they bring,” McGuire said. “We need to continue building and pushing forward.”
With the offseason break approaching, Texas Tech’s focus shifts to regrouping and preparing for next season, determined to bounce back stronger.
