KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee basketball continued its dominant start to the season with a 92-57 victory over Montana on Wednesday night, pushing the Vols to 3-0.
While the win was never really in doubt, Tennessee had to battle through some early adversity, including turnover issues and foul trouble, to pull away in the second half.
All five of Tennessee’s starters made a significant impact, with four finishing in double figures. Igor Milicic led the charge with a career-high 18 points, showcasing his growing role in the offense. Despite the win, the Vols struggled in the first half, with Montana’s Money Williams keeping the Grizzlies in the game by putting up a heroic performance. Tennessee’s 13 turnovers and 16 fouls highlighted areas of concern that they’ll need to clean up as the season progresses. If the Vols can shore up those mistakes, they’ll be a real threat come postseason time.
The second half saw a different Tennessee team. With their depth taking over, the Vols exploded, outscoring Montana 52-26 and effectively sealing the game. While Williams continued to shine for the Grizzlies, Tennessee’s superior talent and team chemistry proved too much to handle.
With players like Milicic, Zakai Zeigler, and Chaz Lanier forming a potential “big three,” Tennessee’s roster looks dangerous. Add in contributors like Felix Okpara, Jahmai Mashack, and Jordan Gainey, and the Vols have an arsenal of scoring options. Coach Rick Barnes’ blend of established stars and new transfers is quickly coming together, making the Vols a formidable force in college hoops.
Still early in the season, Tennessee (No. 11) is already looking like one of the most exciting teams to watch. Next up: a showdown with Austin Peay on November 17 at 3:00 PM ET.
